City Actively Working to Resolve 2022 Tax Levy Error

During preparation of the City’s tax levy proposal for tax year 2023 (payable 2024), a clerical error was discovered in the amount levied for tax year 2022 (payable 2023).

Signed Ordinance 2022.14 reflects a levy increase of $720,000 for a total City tax levy amount of $3,905,960.  This conflicts with the Council’s vote on December 19, 2022, to approve a levy increase of $600,000 for a total City tax levy amount of $3,785,960.  As a result, the City of Sycamore collected $120,000 more in property taxes in 2023 than Council voted to approve.

The estimated total impact (over-collection) on the average Sycamore homeowner is approximately $10.00 to $20.00 for the year.

This error can be traced back to the fact that the City inadvertently overlooked updating Ordinance 2022.14 to reflect the final, approved amount prior to submitting the documents to the County.

The City contacted the County immediately upon learning of this error and is actively developing options to rectify it.  This matter will be discussed at the next meeting of the City Council on Monday, November 20th at 6:00 PM, and information will be published to the City’s website and social media channels to keep our community informed as we work to resolve this error.
